How the Calculation Works
This calculator gets to your percentage in three steps. First, it looks up an open-class standard time for your distance and gender — a fixed baseline built into the calculator (for example, the men's 10K standard used here is 26:10). Second, it looks up an age factor for your age, gender, and distance: a number at or below 1.0 that represents how much slower a runner at your age is typically expected to be than a prime-age runner at that same effort level. Runners 30 and under use a factor of 1.0 (no adjustment); above 30, the calculator interpolates between reference points at 35, 40, 45, and so on up to 90. Third, it multiplies your actual time by that factor to get an "age-graded time," then divides the open-class standard by that age-graded time to produce your percentage:
age-graded time = actual time × age factor percentage = (open-class standard ÷ age-graded time) × 100
One honest caveat: the age factors and open-class standards here are this calculator's own simplified, WMA-style approximation, built to reflect the shape of real age-grading curves — they are not a lookup against the official published World Masters Athletics tables, which are more granular and maintained by the organization itself. Worked Example
Take a 45-year-old male runner who finishes a 10K in 45:00 (2,700 seconds). The age factor for a 45-year-old male at 10K sits exactly on a reference point in the table: 0.92.
age-graded time = 2,700 × 0.92 = 2,484 seconds → 41:24
The men's 10K open-class standard used here is 1,570 seconds (26:10), so the percentage is:
(1,570 ÷ 2,484) × 100 = 63.20%
On this calculator's scale, 63.20% falls in the "Local Class" band (60-69%). If that same runner had been 30 instead of 45, the age factor would be 1.0 and the identical 45:00 finish would score (1,570 ÷ 2,700) × 100 = 58.15% — lower, because at age 30 there's no age adjustment softening the comparison against the open-class standard. That gap is the entire point of age grading: it credits the 45-year-old for the fact that a 45-minute 10K typically represents more relative effort at 45 than at 30. What Your Percentage Means
This calculator sorts scores into bands: 100%+ is approximate World Record level, 90-99% is World Class, 80-89% is National Class, 70-79% is Regional Class, 60-69% is Local Class, and anything below 60% is Recreational. The percentage is capped at 100% here purely to keep the output from reading as "better than the world record," since the underlying standards are approximations rather than exact live records. Two runners at completely different ages and paces can land on the same percentage and, by this measure, be putting in an equivalent relative effort — which is the whole reason age grading exists as a comparison tool. Why Use Age Grading Instead of a Straight Time Comparison?
A raw finish time rewards being young more than it rewards effort — a 25-year-old and a 60-year-old running the identical training volume will still post very different clock times, because aerobic capacity and speed naturally decline with age even with consistent training. Age grading strips that out by comparing you to the open-class standard through your own age-adjusted lens instead. Limitations
A few things to keep in mind. The age factor table interpolates linearly between fixed reference points (30, 35, 40 ... 90), so results between those points are a straight-line estimate rather than a curve fit to real performance data. Ages 30 and under all use the same 1.0 factor, meaning the calculator doesn't distinguish a 22-year-old from a 29-year-old.
